Washington D.C.

Hey so I am basically going on my first ever vacation to the greater D.C. area next week. I'm taking suggestions of the awesomest places to visit during my trip. Since I am kinda into the Discovery Channel and such, my places for starting are:
  • Smithsonian Air & Space Museum
  • National Museum of Natural History
  • National Postal Museum
  • Guggenheim Museum (if we get to that corner of the woods
But I expect there is more. If anyone knows a few good places (academic or otherwise), I'd be really happy to know where I should visit. I will also do my best to photo-document my trip.

Oh my gosh!!!!! You're coming to DC? How long are you in the area? Do I get to perhaps catch a glimpse of you from afar? Will you be attending any of the DC wards on Sunday? Can I be your DC stalker?

A few suggestions for places to visit:
1. "The Awakening" statue-it's one of those things that isn't on everyone's DC touring list, but it's an absolute gem. You'll need someone with a car to get there
2. The Capitol building-I can arrange a staff tour if you'd like.
3. The National Cathedral-I know, you've seen one cathedral and you've seen them all, but this really is an impressive building and the gardens are great this time of year
4. The Botanical Gardens-perhaps I'm going overboard on the gardens theme, but spring in DC is fantastic and the botanical gardens are stunning
5. The Museum of Natural History Ornithology display-i know how much you enjoyed your ornithology course, this display might bring some of those fond memories back...or perhaps simply induce a bout of Post-traumatic stress disorder.
Happy travels!!

ooh, I forgot to tell you that if you're here over a Saturday, you should stop and get some blueberry pancakes at Eastern Market (an outdoor market here in the District)...the pancakes will turn your entire mouth blue but they are well worth it.

I have never been there but one of my favorite painting is in the Phillips Gallery of the National Collection. It's called "The Musicians" by Nicolas de Stael. I think it would be something great to see in person.

Oooh, all good ideas. Thank you so much for your input. I will definitely try to make it to all those places. I am looking forward to a very fulfilling trip.

Camille, yes we should try to hang out. I will be at John's place in Georgetown from Wed evening to Monday morning. Let's try and work something out.

I hadn't even thought of going to stand where Dr King spoke. That sounds really cool. Thanks.

Cate, if I find the pencil, I guarantee I will buy it.
