A Villanelle on "The Contents of My Pockets"

By Andrew
The contents of my pockets cannot last,
The feelings in my heart are not yet spent,
Be close forever and for ages past.

My phone is new (the fourth!) and it is fast.
I know not where its predecessors went.
The contents of my pockets cannot last.

My bleeding lips thank heaven for elast…
…icity that my
lip balm there has meant.
Be close forever and for ages past.

Once shrined in tape, now risen from its caste,
My wallet,
it was broken, it was bent.
The contents of my pockets cannot last.

The keys I carry have but little massed
That space, for years,
I’ve hardly put to rent.
Be close forever and for ages past.

Belongings I have carried, saved and glassed:
perhaps some few ought not be kept, but sent.
The contents of my pockets cannot last.
Be close forever and for ages past.

This is awesome. I'm wondering if your poems are coinciding with National Poetry Month on purpose. We're doing poetry in my class right now. Do you mind if I read this to my sixth graders?

Paige, I had no idea it was National Poetry Month! How exciting. I must have been inspired.

FYI, from my experience, writing a Villanelle is really hard and mostly consists of staring at a blank screen, then writing a few words, then erasing them. Just repeat that about four or five times, and then all at once write out the entire thing. I thought it was pretty fun in the end.

I forgot to mention Paige, please use anything from my blog however you like. It is nice to know that I might be influencing America's youth.
