No Toothbrushes?

I love public libraries. One thing I love is that everyone is allowed to come in and loiter no matter what their circumstances. In a city like Salt Lake, that means that there are lots of poor and homeless people who spend their days at the library.

Yesterday I overheard a pair of men talk about how life was like on the streets, how tough their problems are, and how great alcohol is as a way to deal with that. I also had a tablemate talk my ear off about how his $60 laptop is just as good as mine if all you want to do is type. He has a really good point and I thought it must be really fun for him to have a laptop. It is for me. I also saw a guy in the bathroom using hand soap and his finger to brush his teeth.

That made me really sad and prompted me to look online for organizations that provide homeless people with dental supplies. I found one that offers dental work, but I don’t know of any that offer preventative care (toothbrushes, paste & floss), as opposed to remedial dental care. Does such an organization already exist? Or must I start it?

i think it falls to your shoulders to at least make them available at the salt lake library. we can talk branching out and "franchising" in a year or so.
