My New Identity Starts... Now

I imagine that, when someone is horribly disfigured in a fire or accident, that they would probably need time to adjust to not looking the way that they're used to. After associating the shape of their face, etc. with their personal identity for so many years, it must be difficult to suddenly have that appearance taken from you.

So it was with me last night when I realized that my deodorant is no longer showing up in grocery store isles; Speed Stick's Cool Fusion was my identity, it was a part of me. Now it is being forever torn away.

I probably spent a good half hour in the toiletries isle last night, trying to determine the new path to take in underarm scents. I sample-smelled many of the products and cautiously weighed the pros and cons of each. Because major decisions require mental effort, the ordeal resulted in a mentally taxing evening.

I learned several things during my time in the deodorant isle:
  • Stetson brand deodorant smells almost exactly like Off insect repellent
  • Adidas offers an underarm product that claims a 48-hour victory over odor. I'm not sure how they do that, but I almost expect something that powerful to have side-effects
  • I don't think I will ever buy antiperspirant (I assume that the aluminum will end up killing me)
  • I don't like choosing a new deodorant. I want a long-term relationship with my chosen scent and I want any divorce between me and my scent to be on my terms, not on those of a multinational company.
So today dawns a new era of my life. One, not defined by Cool Fusion, but by Aqua Reef. I can only hope that my days in the Red Zone will be as rich, fulfilling and free of obnoxious odors as the past few years have been.

who knew amazon sold deodorant? a pack of six could last you a few months at least, right?

I really appreciate your looking, but I think I'm just going to jump with both feet into my new, cool-fusion-free life. It looks like there are only two packs left so, if my assumptions are right, a few months from now there won't be any more. I need to face this reality and just move on... although I do sort of feel like I'm watching the last couple trees get cut down on Easter Island.

48-hours? How do they measure these 48-hours? Do you think that that's 48 regular stress hours? Would the amount of protection decrease as the stress increased?

I was lucky to find this graph which explains such situations:

i usually change my deodorant scent as soon as and sometimes before my current stick runs out. good luck with the change. I once used my little brother's old spice red zone deodorant and i definitely smelled like "boy" for days. red zone's strong, but hopefully in good "andrew's signature scent" kind of way.

Upon hearing this unfortunate news, I am quite depressed. However, I don't believe that Cool Fusion was the source of all your power. Perhaps some is still salvageable? I, personally, have been using Old Spice Original to treat my separation anxieties. Best of luck embracing your new pursuits!
